Artist's Statement
March 2010. We were a group of determined artists – far outside our comfort zone, in the dark on a cold, windy night on Monterey Wharf #2. We were there chasing moonlight and the dancing lights that filled the water from the moored boats and dock. This was a challenge we had never encountered before. With our headlamps, flashlights and gloves we learned just how hard this type of plein air painting can be. The drama and color of night are the results you see before you.
Signature members of the Monterey Bay Plein Air Painters Association also have spent the last few months chasing spectacular sunsets, early misty sunrises and the beautiful golden hours of twilight, as well as the lighting conditions that fleetingly pass in the hours between.
So, welcome to the “Sunset to Sunrise” exhibition, forty paintings by eighteen determined artists capturing dynamic atmosphere.
